How many of us LOVE Pottery Barn but whose husbands would kill us if we actually purchased something for full price from this little haven of home decor??? Yeah…me too.
As I was Pottery Barn surfing, I stumbled upon this cute pillow for the 4th of July. I have also been meaning to use burlap (since it’s so cheap and the new “in” thing to work with), so I decided to make this pillow myself and save myself a pretty little penny.
You will need:
-craft paint (red, white, and blue)
-fabric medium (to mix in with craft paint)
-3 sponge brushes (one for each color you are using)
-star stickers (you decide on size…I bought cheap, small star stickers…color does not matter)
-burlap (measurements depend on what size/shape pillow you will be making)
-stuffing (or an old pillow you want to recover)
-ruler or straight edge
Step 1: I first decided on shape and size. I used a pillow from L’s playroom (purchased at Ikea) as my pattern and cut the burlap to size.
Step 2: Mix the paint with a few drops of fabric medium.
Step 3: Paint flag using sponge brushes (white background for starts and red & white stripes). *Paint the background of the stars all white first. You will see why later. Also, my flag only has 8 stripes…you can do 13 if you can fit them.
Step 4: Let dry. *I used my blow dryer to speed up the time.
Step 5: Place star stickers on white background and press down firmly.
Step 6: Dab blue paint over star stickers and cover the white background. Let dry. *Again, I used my blow dryer to speed up the time.
Step 7: Peal off star stickers carefully. *I used a toothpick to help me get the stickers up.
Step 8: Fold inside out and pin edges. Sew 3 edges, leaving one open for stuffing.
Step 9: Turn right side out and stuff.
Step 10: Fold down last edge and hand stitch closed. DONE!!
I wanted to do something on the back of my pillow….This is what I came up with…
from Pottery Barn = $35
Pottery Barn knock off = $3-$5 and about 2 hours of time
