My father-in-law just gave me a bunch of stuffing and batting and a couple of small pillows to add to my craft supplies (love all things FREE!!). Since my hubby has been hard at work building our 2 year old a toddler bed, I thought I would sew her a couple of decorative pillows.
Because I am still so in love with her bedding, I decided to match the pillows to it. A very light, soft pink and a light, chocolate brown. I knew that I wanted embellished pillows so that they would be more girly, but I wanted them to look different from one another. After I found the perfect fabric at JoAnn’s, I went to work…
1. Measure your pillow and don’t forget to account for the hem.
2. Pin right sides together (so that the material looks “inside out”).
*On one of the pillows I added beads to the ends (rectangular pillow) and pinned them in while pinning the right sides together.
3. Sew 3 of the 4 sides using a 1/4″ hem. If you don’t sew, you can use fabric glue.
4. Turn right side in and stuff with stuffing or the pillow you are covering.
5. Sew last side together (I stitched this side by hand).
*On the light brown square pillow I added a fabric flower with a pearl button center (to match the pearl beads on the pink rectangular pillow).
I am a beginner when it comes to sewing, so this tutorial is SUPER easy. I am sure there are professionals out there that would look at my work and just know that I am not an experienced sewer…but that’s okay. I am learning :)
Did I mention that L just loves her girly new pillows? Probably not as much as she loves her new “Big Girl Bed” that daddy made her…but still…she loves them. And she can’t tell if I am Suzie the Sewer or Franny the Fake ;)
If I can do it, you can do it! Mine for the Making, yours for the trying. Now go! Make some cute pillows!
