Lucky for me, my father-in-law is an avid garage sale buyer…meaning he shops at them often.
Because of this, I often get to pick through what he’s found.
The other day I found the perfect frame…
but it needed a little something.
And by a little something I mean spray paint.
I have a few shelves full of spray paint in my craft nook (and in the garage…not gonna lie). Spray paint makes me HAPPY. I love turned old into new…dull into bright.
I took the frame apart with the help of this guy…
He thinks he’s helpful but really he’s a big baby that wants to curl up in my lap every time I sit or squat down. But this momma is on the go, working on too many projects at one time while entertaining my busy bee 4 year old.
After I took the frame apart, I primed the it with Leather Brown (Krylon) and let it dry. With the dry heat in Arizona, it takes no time at all for paint to dry outside. Then I sprayed the frame again, but this time with Satin Aqua (Rustoleum). After it dried I sanded areas of the frame so that the Leather Brown under the Aqua would peek through. Then I used my dark brown stencil rub and rubbed a bunch into the frame. The final coat of spray paint was a satin clear coat to lock it all in.
I left the glass and horrible
picture out. I spray painted the cardboard backing of the frame with chalkboard paint and gave it a good 3 coats. After drying for 24 hours, I colored the whole thing with chalk, then wiped it down with a dry paper towel (this ensures your chalkboard will work well as a chalkboard). I put the frame back together and viola!
Right now it’s hung in the kitchen/dining room and we are using it as our Summer Bucket List of all the fun things we are planning to do this summer like…
Movies
Bowling
Splash Pad
Root Beer Floats
S’Mores
Camping
We’ve completed most of the list already so we will be adding more.
Do you have a Summer Bucket List?
What kinds of things do you have on yours?
I just love how simple and inexpensive it is to make chalkboards. They can be used for so many things… organizational tools, decor, and for educational purposes.
I hope your week is going well so far! Ours is full of fun summer time activities and we are just loving it!
See you tomorrow, friends.
