Good morning mommies! Grab your drink of choice and put your feet up for a few minutes for Mommy Tell All Monday! Today one of my sweet friends, Nicole, is sharing her positive reward system she uses with her two girls, Gem Jars.
Last week I posted a picture on Instagram of my eldest daughter and my husband before heading out on a daddy-daughter date. I mentioned that she got to choose who and where she wanted to go because she filled up her “Gem Jar”. Can you tell how excited she was?
So what is a “Gem Jar” you might ask?
A “Gem Jar”, as we call it, is basically a positive behavior reward system. We set it up in our home over a year ago and use it (almost) every day with great success! We use mason jars but you could use recycled pickle jars, vases etc. We have a jar for each of our daughters, and we fill them with “gems” we bought at the dollar store. You can also use rocks, beads, marbles or pompoms.
We add the “gems” to their jars when they are caught making good choices such as…
- being kind to others
- listening the 1st time
- morning/bedtime chores without being asked
- using good manners
- being helpful
Once they fill up their jars they get to go on a special date night with mommy or daddy of their choosing as well as what restaurant/activity they want to do on their date.
We only focus on rewarding the positive behavior; we never remove any gems for the negative behavior. I know some have, but our goal is to just focus on the GOOD! Amy, over at Teach Mama, has some great phrases to motivate her kiddos which we have used and have worked wonders in our home!
