Can you believe it’s already back to school season? Our family is getting back into the groove of things now that we have started up our homeschooling again, and it feels great to be back on a schedule. One thing I’ve found to help fight the back to school blues is celebrating the start of the new school year. It doesn’t have to be a huge party, just something fun and special for you and the kids to do. My daughter and I love snacks and we love our favorite Netflix shows. So we decided to make a themed Salty Sweet Popcorn Treat and watch the newest season of Spirit Riding Free together to celebrate our new school year!
As soon as my daughter informed me that season 6 of “Spirit Riding Free” would be available on Netflix August 17th, I knew that would be the perfect way for us to have a chill afternoon after the first couple of weeks back to school. Have you seen the Netflix original series for kids? It’s about a 12 year old girl named Lucky moving from the big city to a small town in Texas. She meets and rescues a horse named Spirit and shortly after makes two new friends, Pru and Abigail, who also have horses, Chica Linda and Boomerang. It’s an adorable series about adventure, freedom, and friendship and my daughter loves it.
Every show binge or movie needs a good snack! So I stopped at Walmart and grabbed our favorite Pop Secret popcorn and several different kinds of baking chips. We love Pop Secret because it’s a delicious, high-quality snack with a great butter taste that we can share with the whole family. So back at home, my daughter got to work popping popcorn. After, she poured it out on wax papered baking sheets.
We melted 4 different kinds of baking chips: white chocolate, milk chocolate, butterscotch, and peanut butter.
Then we drizzled it over the popcorn using a spoon. We used the colors of the horses in “Spirit Riding Free” to determine the color of the drizzle. Spirit’s popcorn treat is peanut butter and milk chocolate, Chica Linda’s popcorn treat is white chocolate butterscotch, and Boomerang’s popcorn treat is white and milk chocolate.
Kids always love drizzling melted baking chips, so make sure you include them in making this fun and easy snack!
After you are done drizzling, put the popcorn in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes to let the melted baking chips set. Then you can break the popcorn apart and put them into separate bowls.
We got a bit more festive and decorated the counter with faux grass and plastic horses. I found the plush Chica Linda at Walmart when I grabbed the Pop Secret popcorn and just knew my daughter would love it. I keep the cute paper popcorn bags on hand for movie nights, sleepovers, and parties and they were perfect for this occasion.
It’s fun to allow the kids serve themselves so they can pick which kinds of the Salty Sweet Popcorn Treats they want in their popcorn bag. Luci had a combo of all three!
And if you are big fans of horses like we are, you can wear your horse attire for the show too! Such an easy way to make it a bit more fun.
This cute girl and I had so much fun making our snack and decorating for “Spirit Riding Free.” Creating this fun afternoon was actually minimal in work and effort, yet oh the memories we will made! I love our special mom and daughter time together, outside of our homeschooling. It’s so important.
Are your kids looking forward to the new season of “Spirit Riding Free?”
